Protective Factors
Research suggests that the benefits of protective factors can outweigh the negative impact of risk factors. The relatively limited research on protective factors has identified:
- family
- positive relationships with peers
- community
- positive school environments
- academic success
- home-school interconnectedness
- optimism
- hope
- communication skills
Little is known about the role of culture in relation to protective factors. Because the community of Surrey has a large and diverse multi-cultural population, Acting Together is interested in identifying culturally relevant protective factors.
Research activities will focus on identifying those protective factors that are most relevant to the local community. All project activities will strive to be culturally sensitive and ensure .
