Kwantlen Gets $1 Million for Gang-Prevention Research

Instead of trying to figure out why kids get involved in gangs by looking at society's faults, why not examine what we're doing right with the young people who reject the gang lifestyle? That's the theory that arose during public discussions held in Surrey in 2006 and one that has now landed Kwantlen Polytechnic University a $1-million grant [ awarded by SSHRC ].
On Tuesday (May 19), it was announced that Kwantlen is one of just 10 universities chosen from 79 applicants to receive a federal research grant to look at how to keep young people from falling into the gang lifestyle. It was the only social issues grant awarded west of Ontario by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
The focus of Kwantlen's five-year study, said project leader Dr. Gira Bhatt, will be on protection and prevention aspects of youth and gang involvement.
