City of Surrey
The City of Surrey has begun a process to develop a Sustainability Charter that will guide the City's approach to environmental, social, and economic sustainability. Increasingly, cultural sustainability is being considered as a fourth aspect of sustainability. The definition of "sustainability" in Surrey's context is: "the principle of meeting the needs of the present generation in terms of the environment, the economy and social systems while promoting a high quality of life, but without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
A Plan for Social Well-Being
The City has prepared a "Plan for the Social Well-Being of Surrey Residents" (the Plan) to guide the future actions of the City and the community. The purpose of the Plan is to better understand the priority issues affecting the social well being of Surrey residents; Propose actions the City can take to better meet the social needs of Surrey residents that are within the City's ability and responsibilities to address, and; Assist the City in advocating on behalf of Surrey to other levels of government and community organizations on social issues where the City has limited or no responsibility.
Five Key Areas
The plan focuses on the following five key social issue
- Housing and Homelessness
- Substance Abuse and Addiction
- Children and Youth
- Crime and Public Safety
- Community Development and Diversity
